To Preserve Mackinac Island, her traditions and prosperity
The Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau was founded in 2002 to replace the Mackinac Island Chamber of Commerce. We are now the primary organization on Mackinac Island dedicated to promoting the interests of the business community. Though the promotion and marketing of the Island’s commercial, historical and natural attractions, potential visitors now receive information, assistance, guidance and aide from the Tourism Bureau through publications, websites, telephone and information requests while on the Island. We also work with organizations such as National Tour Association and Travel Michigan for the planning and coordination of groups, conventions and other programs to attract visitors to Mackinac Island. As a Tourism Bureau, business members are linked to our site www.mackinacisland.org and other sites we create. In addition we collaborate with www.ntaonline.com and www.michigan.org and other sites to promote Mackinac Island.
The Tourism Bureau has been the leading marketing organization responsible for generating day trips and overnight visitation in order to enhance the vitality of our economy. With over 275 business,
non-profits and individual members, the Tourism Bureau is also concerned with the ongoing viability and vitality of the island’s historical, cultural, civic, environmental and recreational features that position Mackinac Island as a premier destination for visitors and provides a special way of life for its residents.
In addition to our budget, a dedicated group of member businesses created the new Mackinac Island Convention and Visitors Bureau in 2011 to collect a room tax used to promote Mackinac Island as a destination. This led to a larger budget and now the ability to seriously partner with the state of Michigan on the Pure Michigan Campaign specifically for Mackinac Island. Throughout the years, many of our member businesses and attractions have contributed a voluntary assessment for marketing and advertising the Island as a destination with the state of Michigan, but now we have the finances necessary to promote the Island to a wider market. This collaborative effort between the MITB and the MICVB will ensure Mackinac Island becomes known nationally.
Eligibility for membership is open to any individual or entity interested in the undertaking and mission of the Tourism Bureau and membership applications are reviewed for acceptance by the board of directors at any scheduled board meeting.
