Filmmaking
Making a film on Mackinac Island offers many benefits to the producers and film companies. With over 300 years of architecture, the horse drawn environment, a forested state park and a military fort, the Island is ideally suited to the past, present and future as a set for a motion picture, television show or indy film. In addition, the Island has a sound stage at Mission Point Resort and a theatre for dailies.
The state of Michigan now offers a film incentive, officially called the Michigan Film Production Credit which is a refundable, assignable tax credit of up to 42% of the amount of select production company expenditures that are incurred in producing a film or other media entertainment project in Michigan. The film production credit is available to companies that are “in the business of producing qualified productions.”
